11 Books Your Introverted Child Will Just Love that also Prepare Him or Her for Real LIfe

Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery
Comments: Your introverted girl will identify with Anne's vivid imagination and insightful nature. Grades 5-7. This was my introverted niece Alison's favorite book when she was 7.

The Ugly Duckling by Hans Christian Andersen
Comments: A classic comfort for introverted children who just don't seem to "fit in" until later. Ages 3-9. Hans Christian Andersen was himself an introvert and he understands the territory.

The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams
Comments: The quintessential experience of the introverted child is "loving things alive". This book gives great emotional support to the introverted child's natural experience of reality.

Evan's Corner by Elizabeth Starr Hill
Comments: Evan is the kind of boy who takes pleasure in his special possessions, who likes to be lonely from time to time and who enjoys peace and quiet. This book gives introverted children ages 4-8 a good sense of self and a positive self image.

The Man Who Lived Alone by Donald Hall
Comments: This is a story about a man who lives alone and enjoys it. Solitude is one of the greatest pleasures of the introvert. One reviewer, undoubtedly an extrovert, remarks "Nothing much happens here but there is a deep tranquility." Your introverted child knows what this means. Ages 7-10.

Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson
Comments: Every introverted child will identify as Jess and Leslie create a secret kingdom in the woods called Terabithia, which they rule as king and queen. A sad ending teaches children about the real life difficulties of bridging the inner and outer worlds. This knowledge will be good preparation for life as an introvert. Roughly 5th grade.

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
Comments: A well-loved classic and 1963 Newberry Medal winner. Ages 9 and older learn about personal power as they travel with the children of a gifted scientist and a missing physicist through time and space to triumph over evil. Especially a great book for gifted introverts. This was my daughter's very most favorite book in the 5th grade.

The Silver Pony: A Story in Pictures by Lynd Ward
Comments: Told only in pictures, this is the story of a lonely farm boy who confuses his dreams of adventure on a winged pony with reality. Loneliness is a concept that is imposed on introverts by concerned extroverts. This book helps to make a bridge between your child's reality and that which will be imposed on him or her from the outside. It is another book that deals with the "loved real" reality of introverts.

Chasing Redbird by Sharon Creech
Comments: For that special quiet middle child by a Newberry Prize Winner. Zinnia's life begins to change when she stumbles upon a hidden, overgrown pathway that stretches from the edge of her family's farm into the great unknown. The journey begins this way for the introverted child. Grades 4-6.

The View from Saturday by E.L. Konigsburg
Comments: This book centers around a group of four brilliant introverted 12-year-olds and the tea party they have each Saturday morning. Ages 8-12.

The Neverending Story by Michael Ende

The Power of Appreciation

Is there anything more mysterious in theworld than the formula to having a successful romantic relationship? Asa divorced woman, I now marvel at those who are able to createpassionate, loving, long-term relationships. From my studies with booksand the school of hard knocks, I believe that one of the most importantingredients in relationships, of all kinds, is appreciation. What is Appreciation? Appreciation is likea much-needed rainfall to a farmer's crops that have been withering ina drought. Just as the crops start to shrivel and die without water, human relationships also start to feel brittle without a steadyapplication of the nourishing, even life-giving, impacts ofappreciation. The dictionary defines appreciation as "a favorablecritical estimate," "sensitive awareness" and "an expression ofadmiration, approval or gratitude." When you appreciate someone, youare tuned into a positive quality of another human being and expressyour gratitude for it. ...
