Tom Clancys Legacy Lives on in Jack Ryan Trailer

Jack Ryan is back after an 11-year break from the big screen, as Tom Clancys CIA operative returns this Christmas in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit . Star Trek: Into Darkness star Chris Pine plays Ryan in this reboot of the series, succeeding previous Ryan actors Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck. Tom Clancy: Master of War Rolling Stones 1994 Profile In the story an original by Clancy, who died earlier this week Ryan kicks off his career after 9/11 and the war in Afghanistan. Hes tasked with stopping a villainous Russian, played by Kenneth Branagh, from carrying out a terrorist attack to cripple the U.S. economy. Keira Knightly plays Ryans love, Cathy, while Kevin Costner plays Williams Harper, Ryans handler. Ryan eludes relentless covert forces, consults with Harper and opens up to Cathy about his real job. But, as Harper warns, Sometimes the ones closest to us are the ones we should trust the least.

Judd Apatow Leads Career Study of His Films at L.A. Conference

From Freaks And Geeks to his upcoming This Is 40 , which features Paul Rudd as the founder of an indie record label, Hollywood auteur Judd Apatow has made music a central part of his oeuvre. On Thursday afternoon, Apatow led a panel on music in his work as part of the Billboard/Hollywood Reporter Film & TV Music Conference. Career Study with Judd Apatow featured the director, musicians Graham Parker (who plays himself in This Is 40 ) and Michael Penn, as well as composer Mike Andrews and music supervisor Manish Raval, a longtime Apatow collaborator. Most of the 45-minute conversation focused on Apatows current work, This Is 40 , and the HBO series Girls , which features music composed by Penn. But the conversation did steer all the way back to Freaks and Geeks , which includes Apatows one musical regret. He cleared Neil Youngs Only Love Can Break Your Heart for use in the show, but when the series was canceled and NBC wouldnt pay the $30,000 licensing fee, Apatow chose to substi...

The Neon Demon

Danish director Nicholas Winding Refn makes movies from images he paints in his head. Sometimes the result is mesmerizing, as in Pusher, Bronson and especially Drive. Sometimes the movie just lies there like a bad idea ready to be put out of its misery. Only God Forgives is that kind of Refn mistake (and, to my mind, so are Refns Lincoln commercials with a muttering Matthew McConaughey). But his new one, The Neon Demon , is a special kind of awful. Its not that I cant buy the premise that the Los Angeles fashion world is producing a world of jealous models who suck the life out of each other by becoming vampires. That sounds reasonable. What I cant buy is that Refn has made a movie this lifeless and devoid of human interest. Elle Fanning stars as Jesse, the new kid in fashion town. Shes a natural beauty so everyone wants to hate her but not untilafter they fuck her. Ruby (Jena Malone) plays a makeup artist who practically drools at the sight of Jesse. Its even worse for the surgica...

Margin Call

Want to be a fly on the wall when a gaggle of investment bankers precipitate the 2008 financial crisis? Step up for Margin Call , a thrillingly intense look at what went down through the prism of one unnamed Wall Street investment firm trying to save its ass before Armageddon. Writer-director J.C. Chandor, whose father toiled for Merrill Lynch, makes an impressive debut by focusing the action on a 24-hour period that starts with staff layoffs. One of the shitcanned is Eric Dale (a reliably superb Stanley Tucci), a manager who shares the smell of disaster with his protg Peter Sullivan (a very fine Zachary Quinto, one of the films producers). It looks like the future losses will exceed the firms total market capitalization. Peter and his colleague, Seth Bregman (Penn Badgley), call in their boss, Will Emerson (Paul Bettany), who brings in his chief, Sam Rogers (Kevin Spacey). Before total panic, Sam consults with even bigger guns Jared Cohen (Simon Baker, wily perfection) and Sarah Robe...

See 50 Cent, OShea Jackson Jr. in Thrilling Den of Thieves Trailer

Anybody moves, you shoot em, 50 Cents character says in the new Den of Thieves trailer, setting the tone for an action-packed trailer for the heist film, which also costars Ice Cubes son OShea Jackson Jr. whose first major role was portraying his father in the 2015 N.W.A. biopic, Straight Outta Compton . First-time director Christian Gudegast helms the film, which traces a group of bank robbers who are planning the ultimate heist, hitting a bank that has never been robbed: the Federal Reserve. Theres anywhere between $500 and $800 billion in there, Pablo Schreibers ( The Wire ) character tells the crew, which includes 50 Cent and Jackson Jr.s characters. Every millimeter of it is covered by cameras, sensors and motion detectors. This doesnt detract the group from going for the gold. But their efforts could be thwarted by an elite unite of the Los Angeles Sheriffs Department, led by Gerard Butlers character. Amid sweeping skyline shots, the trailer features car chases, plenty of guns an...

Mad Men Recap: Cleaning House

Bravo, Joan. She couldnt save those eight murdered student nurses in Chicago, but when Joan kicked her abusive husbands sorry ass out of the house at the end of Mystery Date, she switched the entire tone of the episode from that of fear to empowerment. Its just a shame she wasnt around to help budding teen Sally understand that just because youre young and pretty doesnt mean men are allowed to turn you into a victim. Even Don wasnt immune to the details of the gruesome July 1966 news story, as it manifested itself in one of the most twisted, perverse plot lines yet. You Give Me Fever Its quite an impressive feat when Don can go one day without crossing paths with one of his former conquests. Unfortunately for Megan, who never got the memo that her husband pretty much had a one-sided open marriage with Betty , Don has been bumping into his old flames a little more often than shed like. How many times is this going to happen? she pouts after meeting the flirtatious Andrea Rhodes in the...

Abigail Breslin on Haunter and Scary Movies

If youve seen Cube or Splice , then you knowVincenzo Natali doesnt make easily digestible movies. (And we mean that literally.) The directors latest release, Haunter (available now on demand) isnt for everyone, but its one of the most inventive ghost stories in years, even if it defies conventional descriptions (think Groundhog Day without the comedy and filtered through the spookiness of Coraline and Ti Wests The Innkeepers .) To make better sense of it all, Rolling Stone sat down with Haunter s seventeen-year-old star, Abigail Breslin, who shed some light on scary movies and her upcoming role in Enders Game . See Peter Travers Ranked List of the 10 Best Zombie Movies of All Time How did you get involved with Haunter ? Ive been a huge horror movie fan ever since I was about twelve, so Ive always wanted to do a scary movie I just wanted it to be the right one. I got this script and immediately loved the character and story. I also loved Vincenzos last film, Splice , so I thought ...

Blades of Glory

The odd-couple joke is right up front: Will Ferrell as Chazz Michael Michaels, the skater as macho slob, and John Heder as Jimmy MacElroy, the twit on ice. You look like a fifteen-year-old girl, only not hot, says Chazz to Jimmy. When a brawl at the 2002 World Figure Skating Championships gets them banned from the sport, they find a loophole that allows them to compete as the first-ever male pair. Thats the one joke, with crotch and gay bits aplenty, on which Ferrell and Heder spin comic variations until the script leaves them dizzy from the strain. Directors Josh Gordon and Will Speck distract us with tricky stunts. And the villains, an incestuous brother and sister played by real-life marrieds Amy Poehler and Will Arnett are a hoot. And Office honey Jenna Fischer is welcome as Jimmys love. But Blades takes a hard fall long before it can even nab a medal for fluff.

Peter OToole Dead at 81

Peter OToole, the acclaimed actor who made his name playing the title role in the 1962 epic Lawrence of Arabia , died in London on Saturday at the age of 81. The New York Times reports that he had been ill for a long time. The 10 Best Movies of 2013 The son of an Irish bookmaker, OToole started off his acting career on the British stage in the 1950s, spending several years at the Bristol Old Vic theater and turning in an impressive performance as Hamlet in a 1958 London production. His portrayal of soldier and scholar T.E. Lawrence in David Leans Lawrence of Arabia earned him his first of eight Academy Award nominations. Further accolades came for his work in Becket , The Lion in Winter , Goodbye, Mr. Chips , The Ruling Class , The Stunt Man , My Favorite Year and, most recently, in the 2006 film Venus . The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences finally gave him an honorary Oscar in 2003 in recognition of his entire body of work, which includes more than 90 films and televisio...

The Fitzgerald Family Christmas

The only good, solid movie to open this weekend is a holiday-themed piece shot through with humor and heartbreak. No bull. And low on sappy. Props to Edward Burns, the writer, director and star, who goes back to this Irish-Catholic roots and the 1995 debut film that put him on the map, The Brothers McMullen . Often called the Irish Woody Allen, Burns knows his way around the business of family. Burns plays Gerry Fitzgerald, the eldest of seven children parented by Josie (a superb Anita Gillette), a single mom since her husband, Big Jim (Ed Lauter), walked out on them 20 years ago. Now Big Jim has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He wants to come home for Christmas. Josie wants no part of the rat bastard. His adult children are divided on the issue. Thats the movie. It sounds like a Hallmark card, but Burns and a bracingly fine cast play it for real. Lots of grit and comic grace notes. Burns introduces so many characters at once that the movie begins to feel like a Tolstoy novel. ...

Mad Max: Fury Road

How to describe the brutal and brilliant cinematic fireball that director George Miller hurls at us in Mad Max: Fury Road ? Try hell on wheels, given the vehicular obsession that drives the film. Its been 30 years since Miller, 70, moved on from the Mad Max trilogy that starred Mel Gibson as Max Rockatansky, a road warrior seeking vengeance for his murdered family. The place? A dystopian wasteland ruled by bike gangs and outlaws of every sadistic stripe. In the years since, Miller an Aussie ER-doctor-turned-filmmaker has gone on to the family-friendly oasis of Babe: Pig in the City and the animated penguins of two Happy Feet musical hits. Welcome back, George. We missed you in the land of the dark and twisted. The long-incubating Mad Max: Fury Road is an R-rated, rocket-fueled romper-stomper, a nonstop chase epic powered by a reported $150 million budget and Millers indisputable visionary genius. One look at Max, and the kiddie fans of Happy Feet would be traumatized for life. S...

The Passenger

For the provocative questions it asks about identity and brute force, David Cronenberg's A History of Violence is the best movie of the year so far. That's what makes the rerelease of Michelangelo Antonioni's 1975 landmark, The Passenger , such a well-timed companion piece. The script, co-written by Antonioni and Peter Wollen, focuses on a TV journalist (a superb Jack Nicholson) who steals the identity of a dead man and embarks on a new life, only to find violent surprises on his trail. Antonioni and Cronenberg differ greatly as stylists, but their shared gift for expressing the comfort and agony of dislocation is uncanny.

Bad News Bears

Billy Bob Thornton is the best weapon against cute that a kid baseball movie ever had. Like Bill Murray, Thornton is allergic to uplift. As Morris Buttermaker, the boozing pussy-hound coach of the Bears a losing team of California misfits Thornton cuts the brats no slack. You look like the last shit I took, he drawls. elcome to Bad Santa baseball with Santas writing elves Glenn Ficarra and John Requa reteaming with Thornton to rock the PG-13 rating. In terms of drugs, the film tones down the 1976 original. Unlike Walter Matthau, who created the role of the badass coach, Thornton doesnt tell kids to grab a toke. But the mischief he does make adds up to wild, rowdy fun. Baseball is a dictatorship, and Im Hitler, says the coach, who spikes his beer with hard stuff, passes out on the field and hustles the Bo-Peep strip club to supply the teams jerseys. Its a business, they pay taxes, he tells the lawyer (Marcia Gay Harden) who stuck him, a man who once pitched an inning in the majors, wi...

The A-Team

Its big, loud, ludicrous and edited into visual incomprehension. But pity the fool who lets that stand in the way of enjoying The A-Team , the super-caffeinated movie version of the series that ran on NBC from 1983 to 1987. Mr. T, who starred on the TV series as B.A. Baracus, reportedly thought the PG-13 movie leaned too hard on the violence and sex. Todays audience, hard-wired to the bloodlust of video games, would laugh at the TV ballets that managed to kill no one. Joe Carnahan ( Narc , Smokin Aces ) doesnt so much direct as shamelessly show off his skills at blowing shit up. But his affection for the crass material is undeniable. The actors follow suit. Peter Travers reviews The A-Team in his weekly video series, At the Movies With Peter Travers. Liam Neeson steps in for the late George Peppard as cigar-chewing Army Ranger John Hannibal Smith. Bradley Cooper has the looks and impish humor to overshadow Dirk Benedict as Templeton Peck, the Face Man. South Africas Sharlto Copley (so...

7 Things We Learned From the Mitt Romney Sundance Doc

Filmmaker Greg Whiteley was given total control over his documentary Mitt which premiered this week at the Sundance Film Festival so long as he promised not to release any footage until after the 2012 presidential election. That unfiltered access proved extraordinary: We see the formerMassachusetts governor goofing around in the snow, tearfully praying with his family, chatting in SUVs and hotel rooms, prepping for debates and debriefing with aides. Mitt presents the political campaign as both home-movie and horserace and is almost entirely uninterested in policy.Whiteleys platform is practically nonexistent, tax rates for the wealthy are never mentioned and the infamous words Let Detroit Go Bankrupt are never heard. The candidate is never portrayed as someone who would, say, misrepresent a position, twist a number, move money offshore, withhold tax returns or launch an unfair attack. (Though his first, successful debate against President Obama recieves plenty of screentime.) Still,...

Watch Mr. Rogers Subtle, Radical Vision in New Doc Trailer

A new trailer for the forthcoming Mr. Rogers documentary, Wont You Be My Neighbor , examines the radical vision that informed one of the most beloved childrens television programs of all time. The clip teases the myriad ways Fred Rogers tweaked television conventions on his long-running PBS show, Mister Rogers Neighborhood , whether he was using simple sets and low production values or holding frank discussion with kids about issues like divorce and death. Actor and singer Franois Clemmons who played Officer Clemmons on the show recalled one remarkable 1969 episode where Rogers took a stand against segregation simply by having the two of them soak their feet together in a kiddie pool. My being on the program was a statement for Fred, Clemmons says. The trailer is also packed with old clips from Mister Rogers Neighborhood , as well as archival behind-the-scenes footage and interviews. The greatest thing that we can do is to help somebody know that theyre loved and capable of loving, Ro...

American Horror Story: Asylum Recap: Productivity, Prayer and Alien Hands

There might be no way to recapture the effervescent weirdness of American Horror Story s pilot episode. I watched it again last night and the icky fun is in the specific details: a dog-bone mobile tinkling in the breeze, two foulmouthed gingers discovering a dying possum. There is so much potential in a dog-bone mobile in a creepy, beautiful house explored by a damaged family. But if Ryan Murphy doesnt quite get there with the second season premiere, boy, its certainly not for lack of trying! The official description is enticing enough: A church-run haven for the criminally insane, ruled with an iron fist by Sister Jude (Jessica Lange), a nun with a troubled past From Nazis and serial killers, to mutants and aliens, no one is safe inside these walls. Nazis, serial killers and aliens: the promise in those words is enough to make me want to get down and kiss Ryan Murphys ring. By rebooting the shows plot, setting and characters for the second season, AHS joins the grand horror traditi...

Watch Gal Gadot Embrace Destiny in Thrilling Wonder Woman Trailer

Diana Prince (Wonder Woman), played by actressGal Gadot, defies her mothers wishes and fulfills her destiny as an ass-kicking superhero in the final Wonder Woman trailer. The clip, which premiered during Sundays MTV Movie & TV Awards, opens with the young protagonist, princess Diana, living on the fictional Amazonian island of Themyscira. Fighting does not make you a hero, her mother warns. Be careful with mankind, Diana. They do not deserve you. But instead of staying clear of humans, Diana becomes entangled in World War I after uniting with American Army pilot Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) and joining the battle as Wonder Woman. The trailer showcases her varied superpowers including an arsenal of moves with her iconic, bullet-blocking shield and teases some lighter, more comedic moments, like dealing with the restrictive clothing of the early 20th century. The Patty Jenkins-directed Wonder Woman , the fourth title in the DC Extended Universe, is out June 2nd.

Joaquin Phoenix as Joker, Tom Hanks as Mr. Rogers Lead 2019 Toronto Film Festival

Joaquin Phoenixs Joker origin story, a Mr. Rogers biopic starring Tom Hanks and more will premiere at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival, which kicks off September 5th. The lineup, as TIFF Artistic Director Cameron Bailey and Executive Director Joana Vicente announced on Tuesday, will include 16 gala selections and 37 special presentations. Among them is Joker , starring Phoenix and directed by Todd Phillips, which Bailey told The Associated Press is likely TIFFs first entry into the superhero world. She continued: But its a really original vision. Its disturbing, utterly compelling, really gripping from start to finish And one of the most remarkable things is that Joaquin Phoenix, in a career of great performances, gives one of his very best. The Hanks-starring Mr. Rogers biopic, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood , was directed by Marielle Heller, who recently helmed the critically lauded Can You Ever Forgive Me? Other big-name filmmakers showing at the festival include S...

Force Awakens Cast, Roots Sing Star Wars Medley A Cappella

The Tonight Show rounded up nearly the entire cast of Star Wars: The Force Awakens to join Jimmy Fallon and the Roots in an a cappella medley that revisited the unforgettable themes and leitmotifs from John Williams original trilogy score. Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Gwendoline Christie, Lupita Nyongo, Carrie Fisher and, briefly, Harrison Ford were assisted by a gaggle of Stormtroopers (played by the Roots), androids and Chewbacca for the performance. The medley jumps from its iconic Overture to The Imperial March to the Cantina Song to a rousing finale. The medley comes as the veil of secrecy that shrouded the much-anticipated film and its plot for the past year finally came down whenthe embargo on The Force Awakens reviews ended at midnight Wednesday Los Angeles time. So far, the buzz for J.J. Abrams entrant into the Star Wars universe is encouraging: The Force Awakens is running at 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, a vast improvement over the maligned preque...

Alpha Dog

He takes his shirt off, sports tattoos, acts tough and smokes a shitload of weed. Thats right, Justin Timberlake plays a shit-for-brains in Alpha Dog . His Frankie is head flunky for a snot-nosed California pot dealer (Emile Hirsch). But what Timberlake lacks in cool, he makes up for in cred. This is a fine, fierce dramatic performance, alive in the eyes, in the gestures that reveal a scared kid under Frankies bravado. You watch Timberlake in this movie and you want to see him take on bigger risks. His comic touch shone brightly on a recent Saturday Night Live , especially in the skit where he stuck his dick in a box and made the girls open it. Mr. SexyBack has talent way beyond his voice and hunk appeal. And that it shows through in a movie this inane, inauthentic and irritating is a tribute to him. Alpha Dog is a gloss on the true story of Jesse James Hollywood (Hirsch plays him as Johnny Truelove), arrested in 2005 for the 2000 kidnapping and murder of the teenage Nicholas Markowit...

Ad Astra Review: Brad Pitt, Lost in Space

Seek out the nearest jumbo screen and let filmmaker James Gray, a renegade visionary with a big reach and a knack for sneaky mischief, sweep you off ad astra (thats to the stars in Latin). Getting lost in the space conjured up by the writer-director and the brilliant Dutch-Swedish cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema ( Interstellar, Dunkirk ) to screw with your head and throw off your equilibrium is part of the fun. Plus youll have Brad Pitt for company, which is good since hes giving one of his best implosive performances as Major Roy McBride, an astronaut on a mission both profound and personal. In essence, Ad Astra is a father-son story told on a cosmic scale. Its not just Roys cool-under-pressure reputation that gets him picked for a top-secret mission to Neptune. Its the fact that his famous-astronaut father, Clifford McBride (Tommy Lee Jones) went missing there three decades ago after heading the Lima Project on a search for intelligent life in the universe. But heres the thing: D...

See Grateful Dead Jam on Sugaree in 1989 Unreleased Video

To tease their upcoming Meet-Up at the Movies, the Grateful Dead have released video of the band performing a laid-back, jammy rendition of the Jerry Garcia solo track Sugaree, which first appeared on the late singers 1972 LP Garcia . The performance in the video culls from the Deads July 19th, 1989 concert at East Troy, Wisconsins Alpine Valley Music Theatre and features a fluttery, hypnotic guitar solo by Garcia. Garcia originally performed all the instruments on the song himself on the studio version, with the exception of drums, which Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann played. The whole Alpine Valley concert which featured a smattering of Merle Haggard, Bob Dylan and Bobby Blue Bland covers, among Dead live staples like Box of Rain, Althea and Terrapin Station, among others will be broadcast in movie theaters nationwideby Fathom Events on May 4th at 7 p.m. local time. The concert marked the last time the group would play at the venue. The groups surviving members are gearing up for the...

J. Edgar

Say this for Leonardo DiCaprio: He doesnt scare off easy from acting challenges. At 37, hes already played billionaire Howard Hughes ( The Aviator ), junkie Jim Carroll ( The Basketball Diaries ), great imposter Frank Abagnale Jr. ( Catch Me If You Can ) and Shakespeares Romeo. In J. Edgar , DiCaprio ages from his twenties to his seventies to play Americas feared and loathed top cop. And despite being buried in layers of (often too obvious) prosthetic latex, DiCaprio is a roaring wonder in the role. He needs to be. Until his death in 1972, J. Edgar Hoover ruled the Federal Bureau of Investigation like a bulldog no one would dare leash. That includes eight presidents, Martin Luther King Jr. and even Marilyn Monroe. For half a century Hoover nosed into private lives to control his enemies, and some friends. But Hoover had secrets too, and now acclaimed director Clint Eastwood, 81, and Oscar-winning Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, 37, are doing the nosing around. The result is a mo...

Worst Movies of 2013 (So Far)

Its the worst of the worst on At the Movies with Peter Travers as he takes us through the most unappealing movies of 2013 so far. Which film earned the dubious distinction of appearing at the very bottom of his Scum Bucket? Travers counts down the films in front of a popcorn-tossing live audience. Summer Movie Preview 2013 The countdown begins with a tie between Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down , which are the same movie, says Travers of those two films about the destruction of the White House. Action movies come under fire with A Good Day to Die Hard. It was terrible, says Travers. Gangster Squad , despite its star-studded cast, was another disappointment for Travers, who says it was hideous beyond belief. Identity Thief was particularly irksome, a scum bucket movie that everyone went to go see, says Travers. Powerhouse actors Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman couldnt redeem that movie. The runner-up for worst movie goes to Pain and Gain . This is the first time where Ive had ...

Golden Globes 2014: Wasted Ladies Kick Ass

This was the beautiful mess we hoped it would be, Tina Fey announced at the end of the Golden Globes. Amy Poehler crowed, And I got to make out with Bono! Both ladies were correct. It was the real American Horror Story: Coven up in here tonight, as this years Golden Globes bash turned into a rowdy celebrity pageant of Wasted Ladies Kicking Ass. Tina and Amy led the way, though they saved their best line for the final stretch: And now, like a supermodels vagina, lets give a warm welcome to Leonardo DiCaprio. Soaring highs, crushing lows: see the best & worst moments at the Golden Globes It was definitely the female stars who made the Golden Globes spectacle a delight to behold. I mean, its not like anybody ever takes these awards seriously, but these ladies really didnt give a fuck. Jacqueline Bisset redefining the art of the incoherent acceptance speech. Diane Keaton singing the Girl Scout Make New Friends song and reducing a room of sloshed celebs to a mortified when-does-this-e...

Endless Love

Why does Hollywood continue to starve audiences longing for a good romantic tearjerker? Endless Love didnt have to be this godawful. In 1979, Scott Spencers novel about impediments to the true love between a teen girl and a mental patient, won deserved raves. As Spencer said: It may be time for serious, literary novelists to take back some of the subject matter we abandoned to hack novelists and the movies. Amen to that, brother. Expectations were high when the great filmmaker Franco Zeffirelli ( Romeo and Juliet ) took on Spencers book in 1981 with young stars Brooke Shields and Martin Hewitt. But the film was a notorious botch job, best remembered for spawning a title song duet by Diana Ross and Lionel Richie. Now, more than three decades later, Hollywood again steps up to the plate and sends Spencers book down in flames. Shana Feste, director of the lame Country Strong , doesnt just serve Spencers tale of erotic obsession with a spoonful of sugar, she pours on the whole effing bowl...

Creed II Review: Michael B. Jordan Gets Back in the Ring

Released in the middle of the prestige-movie season in 2015, Creed wasnt just an anomaly among the Oscarbait-and-biopics circuit: It wondered whether a continuation of a dormant movie series and a comeback of sorts for its creator was in the cards. It was also an unlikely attempt to establish a side franchise, a chance for filmmaker Ryan Coogler to prove he could beat the sophomore slump and a referendum on whether Michael B. Jordan could be a movie star. Quicker than you could yell Adrian! we had answers. The movie became a hit, Sylvester The Rocky Stallone nabbed an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor (you wuz robbed, Rock!) and no one is questioning Coogler or Jordans staying power or box-office clout anymore. The mantle had officially been passed. It more than went the distance. And in the grand tradition of Rocky movies, in which Roman-numeral sequels were not just inevitable but practically exponential, we have the next chapter of Adonis Donny Creed son of Apollo, Rocky...

Chris Rock Rewriting Monologue Following Oscars Boycott

Despite calls for Chris Rockto withdraw from hosting and boycott the Oscars over the award shows lack of diversity among nominees, not only will the comedian still host the February 28th ceremony, he plans to confront the controversy head on during the broadcast. In a new interview, Oscars producer Reginald Hudlin said that Rock will use his opening monologue to call out the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for nominating allwhite actors for the second straight year, which fueled the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite. You should expect [#OscarsSoWhite jokes], Hudlin told Entertainment Tonight . And, yes, the Academy is ready for him to do that. Theyre excited about him doing that. They know thats what we need. They know thats what the public wants, and we deliver what the people want. Rock previously joked about the Oscars lack of diversity on his Twitter account, calling the award show The White BET Awards. Watch Jimmy Kimmel Rebuff Trumps Oscars Criticism

Jimmy Kimmelhad a swift retort after President Trump mocked the Oscars low viewership on Twitter.Kimmel, who hosted Sundays Academy Awards, directly responded to Trumps tweet by calling him out for having the lowest approval rating of any United States president. During his Tuesday night monologue, Kimmel elaborated on the jab, saying that Trump might appreciate the Best Picture Award winner, The Shape of Water. The movie, if you havent seen it, its about a monster who has sex with a woman who cant talk about it. Basically, its like his life story. Right? Kimmel pointed out that Trump always pits himself against the Academy Awards. Trump loves saying the ratings are down, saying thats some kind of show of support for him, said Kimmel, even though viewership for all major televised events from the Grammys to the Super Bowl have declined in recent years. Thanks, lowest rated President in HISTORY. https://t.co/E01UgDaZ3T Jimmy Kimmel (@jimmykimmel) March 6, 2018 Donald Trump Jr. also moc...

Jack Kerouacs Lost Beat Generation Play Premieres

Rumors of a movie based on Jack Kerouacs On the Road have been around for so long that Montgomery Clift, who died in 1966, was once floated for a leading role. Francis Ford Coppola bought the rights in 1979 and has been trying to make the damn thing ever since, on and off. Now, at long last, the film version directed by Walter Salles ( The Motorcycle Diaries ) is set to open this weekend in the U.K., with an American release in December. That means its time for yet another moment in the ongoing cultural discussion of the importance of being Kerouac, the yearning anti-stylist whose literary kicks epitomized the arrival of youth culture, and eventually weighed him down into his grave. Seven years ago, a copy of the authors only play, perversely titled Beat Generation he famously hated the burden was unearthed in a New Jersey warehouse. Ethan Hawke, who was once considered alongside Brad Pitt for one of Coppolas film adaptations, headlined a partial reading of the script that year. Th...

Watch Don Cheadle in Jazzy Trailer for Miles Davis Biopic Miles Ahead

Nearly 10 years had passed since Miles Davis nephew Vince Wilburn declared that Don Cheadle was the only actor who could play the late jazz legend, but it wasnt until Tuesday when Sony Pictures Classics dropped the first trailer for Miles Ahead that the rest of the world got a firsthand look at what Wilburn had in mind. Cheadle didntmerely agree to star in the movie, but co-wrote and directed the film, with the initial peek promising a biopic every bit as reckless and singular as its subject. As Davis puts it at the top of the trailer: If you gonna tell a story, come at it with some attitude, man. Immediately dismissing any thoughts of a typical womb-to-tomb overview of a great musicians life, the trailer starts with (fictional) Rolling Stone journalist Dave Braden (Ewan McGregor) knocking on Davis door and being greeted with a swift punch to the face. Cheadle has honed in on the most frantic portion of the jazzmans life, focusing on the spell that Davis spent in New York City durin...
