See Samuel L. Jackson, Ryan Reynolds Meta Hitmans Bodyguard Trailer

This guy single-handedly ruined the word Motherfucker,' Ryan Reynolds protection agent character says about Samuel L. Jacksons hitman character in a new trailer for Lionsgates The Hitmans Bodyguard . Judging from the clip, the meta statement alluding to Jacksons infamous MF-wielding status hints at a film that likely pokes fun at itself while delivering action-packed scenes. The plot involves a Triple A-rated executive protection agent (Reynolds) being assigned the task of guarding a notorious hitman (Jackson). The pair clearly dislike each other. While sitting in a car, the hitman threatens, I will bust a cap in your ass. The protection agent queries, Have you ever said, Please?' to which the hitmans (obvious) response is, Please , motherfucker! Lots of things explode and blow up, there are car chases, loads of guns and plenty of punches thrown, including Reynolds character hitting Jacksons character. There are also, naturally, tons of expletives. To ratchet up the self-refere...

Singles at 25: Cameron Crowe on Making the Definitive Grunge Movie

By the time Cameron Crowe made Singles in 1992, the 35-year-old director was already a decade into his careers second act. A former journalist for Rolling Stone, hed pivoted towards the movies after adapting his book about going undercover at a Los Angeles high school Fast Times at Ridgemont High for the screen in 1982. And his directorial debut, Say Anything.. . (1989), proved that he had a knack for capturing teen spirit. Crowe, however, wanted his audience to grow up with him, so for his follow-up movie, he turned his attention to twentysomethings. Having moved to Seattle in the late Eighties, he began writing a screenplay revolving around several interlocking storylines nestled in the culture he knew intimately: the citys burgeoning music scene. Released 25 years ago today, Singles captured a city and a group of artists on the brink of national stardom. Yes, the characters were fictional but the bands in the film are real, often playing live mini-concerts on set. (Even the ma...

Stop-Loss

Heres the first major movie of the new year that touches greatness, and damn if there isnt a curse hanging over it. Stop-Loss , directed with ferocity and feeling by Kimberly Peirce ( Boys Dont Cry ), is up against the war raging between audiences and films about Iraq. Box-office casualties last year include Lions for Lambs , Rendition , Redacted , Grace Is Gone and the unfairly scorned In the Valley of Elah . Stop-Loss has the juice to break the jinx. The emotional battlefield on which Peirce paints her canvas strikes a universal chord that transcends politics and preaching. Peirce, who co-wrote the script with Mark Richard, takes us inside the minds and hearts of soldiers who enlisted after 9/11. Why? To get the people who had done this, in the words of Peirce, whose brother joined a unit attached to the 82nd Airborne. At first, Peirce thought of making documentary about the trauma faced by men and women in military service who struggle to re-enter civilian life after duty in Iraq. ...

Sheryl Crow Debuts Easy on Kimmel

Sheryl Crow debuted her new song "Easy" last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live , which turned out to be more like Matt Damon Live after the actor tied up Kimmel and took over the show. Wearing a Western blouse worthy of the golden age of Nudie's Rodeo Tailors, Crow strummed an acoustic guitar on the rootsy song, backed by trebly electric guitar licks, pedal steel and rich backing vocals on the chorus. The song is the first single from an upcoming album that Crow is calling her "country debut."

See James Baldwin in Barry Jenkins Emotional If Beale Street Could Talk Trailer

A couple is torn apart by an unspeakable injustice in the powerful first trailer If Beale Street Could Talk . The movie is based on James Baldwins 1974 novel of the same name and the trailer arrives on the late authors birthday. Directed by Moonlight directorBarry Jenkins, If Beale Street Could Talk tells the story of Fonny and Tish, a young couple who are expecting their first child when Fonny is framed for rape. Tish enlists her dysfunctional family to help prove Fonnys innocence and free him from a corrupt system. The trailer is light on plot specifics, but captures the emotional turmoil of the story. Shots of Fonny and Tish together one moment are juxtaposed with footage of them separated by the glass of a prison visitation booth. The trailer is guided by an old audio clip of Baldwin, who says, When I was growing up, I was trying to make a connection between the life I saw and the life I lived. There are days when you wonder what your role is in this country and what your future ...

Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly Team Up for Absurd Rap Album

When Step Brothers director Adam McKay tweeted earlier this week that Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly would reprise their characters on a forthcoming rap album, it was reasonable to assume that it was some kind of weird joke. But as it turns out, its a weird joke thats actually happening. McKay has since confirmed the project, tweeting, I wasnt kidding about Step Brothers rap album. And we just found out we have a crazy big time producer. No further details have surfaced. Photos: Hip Hop Royalty In Step Brothers , a deeply strange and generally underrated comedy from 2008, Ferrell and Reilly play grown men who clash when their parents get married. After the two bond, they form a rap duo known as Huff N Doback. Peter Travers Video Review: The X-Files, Step Brothers If you are unfamiliar with Ferrell and Reillys rap style, here is a clip of the two performing their absurd song Boats N Hoes in Step Brothers .

Every Secret Thing

Producer Frances McDormand, a supreme talent who doesnt act in this film version of Laura Lippmans unnerving 2003 mystery novel, had this to say about why she decided to help bring Every Secret Thing to the screen: I wanted to make a movie about a group of irredeemable women, giving her last two words an emphatic snap. Point taken. The movie, directed by documentarian Amy Berg ( Deliver Us From Evil ) from a script by Nicole Holofcener ( Enough Said ), doesnt coddle audiences by giving them much to root for. Maybe thats why reviews for the film have been mixed to worse. I say give this toxic valentine to Mothers Day sentiment a chance. Even when it dawdles too much over forensics and then rushes to wrap things up, Every Secret Thing bristles with a toxic energy that commands attention. Tops among the high-powered cast is the extraordinary Diane Lane, who nails every nuance in the role of Helen Manning, a teacher and single mother who lives with what she believes is her biggest embarr...

Simeon Rice on His Kill or Be Killed Horror Film, Unsullied

During his 12-year NFL career, Simeon Rice made three Pro Bowls, won a Super Bowl and was named Defensive Rookie of the Year. His 122 sacks are the 17th most in league history, and, along with Hall of Famers Warren Sapp and Derrick Brooks, he helped turn the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense into one of the most formidable units in football. But, apparently, all he really wanted to do was direct. In the eight years since he last played in the NFL, Rice has graduated from the New York Film Academy and made tentative strides in the world of independent filmmaking. Now, hes preparing to release his feature debut, Unsullied , a survival-horror film he wrote, directed and largely financed. But for a guy who spent a dozen years dominating the cutthroat world of pro football, making the transition to the movie biz has proven to be a lot tougher than bringing down a quarterback. Kendrick Lamar Steals Show With Diss Verse at BET Hip-Hop Awards

When videobegan circulating ofKendrick Lamars performance at the 2013 BET Hip-Hop Awards a few weeks ago, it was clear that the rapper would not be mincing words. In last nights telecast, Kendrick went straight for the jugular and his apparent target was none other than Drake. The 10 Wildest Rap Beefs of All Time Yeah, and nothings been the same since they dropped Control / And tucked a sensitive rapper back in his pajama clothes / Ha ha. Jokes on you! Kendrick barked over Mobb Deeps classic Shook Ones Part II during the cypher portion of the show. The jab seemed aimed squarely at Drake, whom Lamar name-checked in his Control verse, and who just so happens to have released an album titled Nothing Was the Same . After verses from his Black Hippy comrades ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul and Jay Rock and new signee Isaiah Rashad, Lamar hurled potshots at his contemporaries, I got my thumb on hip-hop and my foot in the back of yo ass / Aftermath get the last laugh, he snarled, before eventually naili...

NBC Cancels Community After Five Seasons

After five seasons of absurdist, education-themed comedy, NBC has canceled Community , USA Today reports. Many of the actors and actresses who played the adults attending Greendale Community College mourned the shows demise on Twitter. Community: The Most Hilariously Ambitious Sitcom on TV The shows star, Joel McHale a disbarred lawyer named Jeff Winger kept things short: #darkesttimeline Joel McHale (@joelmchale) May 9, 2014 Yvette Nicole Brown, who played the conservative Christian single mother Shirley Bennett on the show, wrote, Welp, the time has come. #Community has been cancelled. The Day the Box-Office Stood Stoopid

That would be three days actually a Friday, Saturday and Sunday that amassed $31 million cash money for the inane, critically savaged Keanu Reeves remake of the 1951 sci-fi classic, The Day the Earth Stood Still . If that werent bad enough, Fox studios and a privately owned celestial communications network came up with an even stupider publicity campaign to hype the movie about an alien (Reeves) who visits earth to destroy us for destroying the planet through global warming. They utilized equipment at Cape Canaveral to beam the movie to Alpha Centauri, the nearest star system to Earth. Experts say it will take four years to receive the transmission. If there is life on Alpha Centauri, lord knows what revenge they might enact in 2012 for inflicting this crap on them. Me, I rushed home after the screening to watch the original Day the Earth Stood Still on DVD, in sparkling black-and-white, to get the bad taste out of my mouth. Am I wrong? Did you find something to like about the remake...

Travers: Its Time for Julys Scum Bucket

Hot town, scummer in the city Peter Travers is back once again to count down the worst movies of the month, and July was particularly rife with garbage. Our trusty critic says he couldve tossed 25 movies into the Scum Bucket, but hes gracious enough to leave us with only 10. The Best and Worst Movies of 2014 So Far Starting things off is Earth to Echo , a kids movie that thinks its E.T. but doesnt even land in the same universe as Steven Spielbergs classic. Speaking of recycled plots, Very Good Girls finds Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen playing two young girls trying to lose their virginity over summer break, and as Travers succinctly puts it, Its a very bad movie. Next up is the atrocious documentary America: Imagine the World Without Her , in which filmmaker Dinesh DSouza tries to debunk all the myths liberals spew about their homeland doing bad things. Travers points out some of DSouza particularly egregious claims like slavery wasnt bad because black people also owned slave...

Beowulf

I expected the film version of the epically tedious Old English poem to be a craptacular. Director Robert Zemeckis used the same motion-capture process in 2004s The Polar Express and turned live actors into digital humans who looked invaded by body snatchers. Boy, have things changed. The eighth-century Beowulf, goosed into twenty-first-century life by a screenplay from sci-fi guru Neil Gaiman and Pulp Fiction s Roger Avary, will have you jumping out of your skin and begging for more. Be sure to see it in 3-D. I cant vouch for the flat version, but the 3-D Beowulf will debut on a record number of digital screens (1,000, and 90 in IMAX). Put on those plastic glasses and ride, baby, ride. Ive never seen a 3-D movie pop with this kind of clarity and oomph. Its outrageously entertaining. Terrific actors were hired to do the movements and the voices. Ray Winstone, so good in The Departed and, well, everything else, speaks the role of Beowulf like a Viking hero for the ages. The Adonis b...

Aimee Mann Duets With James Mercer on Kimmel

Aimee Mann brought Shins leader James Mercer with her to Jimmy Kimmel Live last night, where the pair duetted on "Living a Lie" from Mann's latest album, Charmer . They blended their distinctive voices into smooth harmonies while Mann strummed an electric guitar and her band filled out the tune, which amounts to a frank exchange of views regarding a relationship. Mann stuck around after to perform "Labrador," another song from Charmer .

Life as We Know It

If youve turned on TV in the last week, youve been bombarded with mind-numbing commercials for this living hell of a movie about two people perky pastry girl Holly (Katherine Heigl) and pervy sports guy Messer (Josh Duhamel) who hate each other until they inherit a baby when the kids parents die in a car crash. Related Peter Travers reviews Life as We Know It in his weekly video series, At the Movies With Peter Travers. Cue the poopy diapers that make two lovers of foes. I wanted to throw a fully-loaded Pamper at the screen. Heigl and Duhamel, on the shoals of once promising careers, struggle mightily to persuade us they are playing humans. But the machine that grinded out this drool possesses nothing resembling a soul. This is crap as we know it, a 113 minute package of romcom suck. Related The Twelve Must-See Fall Movies: Peter Travers runs down a golden dozen and five flicks to skip.

Rainn Wilson, Craig Robinson Spoof Angus T. Jones Filth Video

After Two And A Half Men 's Angus T. Jones called the show "filth" and urged viewers to stop watching, The Office stars Rainn Wilson and Craig Robinson have made their own spoof on the religiously-tinged video. "Dwight from The Office is nothing, OK. The Office is nothing," says Wilson, while repeatedly mentioning the name of the show and when it airs. "If you watch The Office , please don't watch The Office ." Just like Jones, Wilson informs viewers that this "filth" will "rot your brain." Jones quickly apologized, but didn't retract or alter his characterization of the show.

Why Jordan Peele Wont Direct Marvels Blade Reboot

Amid the dizzying multiversal multitude of announcements from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige at San Diegos Comic-Con this weekend, perhaps the most surprising (other than Natalie Portman as a female Thor in Taika Waititis Thor: Love and Thunder ) was a reboot of the long-dormant vampire-hunting franchise Blade , with two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali taking over the title role from original star Wesley Snipes. The project is in its early stages, with no release date, and no director. That void left social media users free to do what they do best, and on Twitter, the consensus was clear: Jordan Peele should do it. It was hard not to wonder, though, why those fans would want one of the only filmmakers alive whos making original ideas viable at the box office to abandon his path after Get Out and Us . And as it happens, when I spoke with Peele at length in December for Rolling Stones cover story, Peele had already been offered more than one big franchise movie and he said hed t...

Megan Fox Draws Blood

M EGAN FOX has been known to say a few things. She says shes a tranny, she says shes a bisexual, she says she has the libido of a 15-year-old boy, she says, Actors are the worst assholes to hang out with theyre either narcissistic douche bags or raging alcoholics, she says most men are weak like puppies, she says she has her boyfriends name tattooed next to my pie. She says all these wonderful, crazy things, which are most often accompanied by pictures of her in bra and panties, with her pillow-plump lips provocatively parted, and then she goes on about her business like shes said nothing of interest at all, leaving delighted tabloid editors everywhere dancing in her wake. But why docs she do this? Whats the point? The theory usually posited is that shes a slut for attention and that her ultimate goal is some kind of freakish worldwide celebrity domination. If thats indeed the plan, so far, so good. At the age of 23, shes already been called the Sexiest Woman on Earth, already been ask...

The Americans Season 2 Premiere Recap: Comrades in Arms

There are so many congratulatory statements I want to make to FX at this time about The Americans. However, since space is limited and I need to maintain some semblance of an objective slant on this recap, Ill just say this: Please, FX, dont ever put The Americans up against Scandal (which returns from its winter hiatus February 27thon ABC). I dont think my nervous system could handle having to choose between two Washington, D.C.-based dramas filled with sex, intrigue and costumes I covet on a daily basis. Anyone who has been following my Twitter feed of late (or that of most TV critics/reporters) will know that its pretty much been an Americans lovefest since I got my hands on the first batch of screeners. So now that the season premiere has aired: For those havent hopped on the Americans bandwagon yet, this recap will serve as my longform argument to, to use a popular term from the Soviet-era drama, turn those remaining holdouts. With Breaking Bad having ended its run last fall...

American Gangster

Call it the black Scarface or the Harlem Godfather or just one hell of an exciting movie, but the fact-based, 1970s-era American Gangster is already looking like a major awards contender. Denzel Washington looms like a colossus as notorious drug lord Frank Lucas, and in the still, watchful center of his volcanic performance youll find the measure of a dangerous man. Theres more good news: A combustible Russell Crowe channels Serpico as Richie Roberts, the honest Jersey cop who aches to take Frank down. Steven Zaillian, sourcing Mark Jacobsons 2000 New York magazine interview with Lucas (The Return of Superfly), brings scrappy life to a script that spans more than a decade. Camera legend Harris Savides shoots on the fly, as if hed sneaked into a Seventies time capsule. And Ridley Scott, at the top of his game, directs like a man possessed. Jay-Z did a hip-hop concept album, unconnected to the soundtrack, to pay tribute. So whats the downside? The movie is long (157 minutes), overstu...

Bumblebee Review: If John Hughes Made a Transformers Movie

Ok, were not sure, exactly, how to say this. Its, um well right, fine [ deep breath ]. Well just say it. So Bumblebee is a spin-off of the Transformers series, those Michael Bay movies of sound and fury and volume and lukewarm metal-on-metal action that are based on a line of toys, because cinema. You probably remember him somewhere within the haze of your post Transformers -movies-screening memories, as very few human beings can recall much from those trainwreck blockbusters about good bots and bad bots, cars and jets, the fate of the world (we think?), etc. Hes the one whos yellow and black, hence the name. Good friend of Optimus Prime. Hates Decepticons. Turns into a bitchin Camaro. And the movie its good. Not just not bad. Its actually good. Imagine if John Hughes made a Transformers movie. Or: Think E.T., but with auto parts. Or, possibly: The Iron Giant, stuck in a world where only 80s action movies and vintage teen-angst movies exist. Or and heres where things admittedl...

Has Dexter Gone On Too Long?

Now that were just past the midpoint of Dexter s eighth and final season, were going to say something that may be unpopular in some crowds: everyones favorite serial killer still has some gas left in his tank. See Who Made Our List of the Best Characters on Television Thats right. Were still enjoying Dexter , despite a few bumps in the road. We suffered through the Rita years, laughed at Dexters many close calls and painstakingly watched as the Travis Marshall case unfolded. We accepted those punches, always rolling right back to our screens for the following weeks episode. You see, whatever shortcomings Dexter has acquired over the past several years, theres always just enough intrigue and mystery to keep us coming back for more. The reason? The continued presence of the core cast. Keeping Dexter, Debra, Masuka, Batista and Harry Morgan together for eight seasons has helped the series maintain a level of familiarity that makes watching it feel like eating a warm bowl of soup. The cr...

The Great Debaters

Directed by Denzel Washington the road to good is of ten paved with good intentions. Director-star Denzel Washington and producer Oprah Winfrey want to tell an inspirational true story in The Great Debaters . So why cut corners to do it? Washington plays Melvin B. Tolson, the professor and poet who coaches his all-black Texas debate team from Wiley College to victory against Harvard in 1935. My guess is the inspiration would have increased exponentially the closer it stayed to the truth. For starters, Wiley beat the University of Southern California, not the vaunted Harvard. And the Wiley team was forbidden to claim victory because it did not belong to the national debate society, which refused to admit blacks until after World War II. A downer ending, sure, but one that digs deeper into our countrys shameful history with racism. The actors are all solid, especially Denzel Whitaker as fourteen-year-old Wiley debater James Farmer Jr., who would go on to found the Congress of Racial Equa...

Johnny Depp to Star in Wes Andersons Next Movie

Johnny Depp will star in Wes Andersons next movie, The Grand Budapest Hotel , according to the The Hollywood Reporter . While few details about the movie itself are available yet (specifically regarding Depps character or the films plot), it will be financed and produced by Indian Paintbrush, and will also mark Andersons first time shooting in Europe. Depp is the first actor to officially sign on to Budapest , though its rumored that Anderson is looking to add some names familiar to his past films, including Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum and Edward Norton (who appears in Andersons latest, Moonrise Kingdom ), as well as Jude Law and Angela Lansbury. Footage of Depps latest film, The Lone Ranger , premiered at Comic-Con over the weekend, and the actor is currently co-editing a lost novel by Woodie Guthrie.

Fk You: George R.R. Martin Responds to Complaints of Slow Writing

Author George R.R. Martin, who created the world of Game of Thrones in his Song of Ice and Fire series of books, has heard fans complaints that he is taking too long with the sagas next installment, The Winds of Winter , and he has two words for them: Fuck you. Top 40 Game of Thrones Characters, Ranked The 65-year-old writer delivered that message to Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger , (viaUproxx), when a reporter brought up the issues of his age and health and the outside chance that something could happen to him before the story is complete. I find that question pretty offensive, he said. He also threw up his middle finger as he delivered his two-word retort. The writer said that he also found it contentious that fans would complain about his attending events rather than staying home and working, noting that he only writes when he is home. But despite his outrage at such suggestions, he also said that he did not know when the next book would be finished. He reiterated, however, that he...

Wind River Review: Taut Thriller on Native Reservation Will Knock You for a Loop

Its always exciting when a talented screenwriter proves he has what it takes to be a full-on filmmaker. Such is the case with Taylor Sheridan, whose scripts for Sicario and Hell or High Water are models of what livewire, literate thrillers should be. Wind River is no exception. Set on a Native American reservation in Wyoming, Sheridans directorial debut begins with the disturbing sight of a young girl, afraid for her life and running barefoot in the snow. Shes later identified as Natalie (Kelsey Asbille), an 18-year-old whose body is found frozen in the snow. The finder is Cory Lambert (Jeremy Renner), a wildlife officer charged with hunting down animal predators, such as wolves and mountain lions. Instead, he finds the victim of a rape and murder. An F.B.I. agent named Jane Banner (Elizabeth Olsen, doing hard-ass to a T) is called in from Las Vegas to investigate. The two lock horns immediately. He knows this land and understands the people who live there in poverty and racial strif...
