Are you thinking about going backto college? Great! Going back to college provides a vastmultitude of possibilities for improving you life and career path.Money is always a big concern when going back to college, aside fromtuition and other bills such as rent, utilities, and food, there aretextbooks. Depending on the area of study, textbooks can costhundreds of dollars each semester. College bookstores are notoriousfor overcharging and the cost of these books is one of the mostfrequent complaints of college students. Many try and escape the highprices by ordering books online. For those thinking about gettingtheir books this way, here are some tips.

Tip #1: Don't order the book unlessyou have the syllabus

Many will go to their college'sbookstores and write down the names of the books that are shelved forthe classes they are taking. The problem is that many times thisinformation is wrong, if you've purchased the wrong book from thecollege bookstore, they should exchange it without any problems. However if you've ordered online and find out that it's an incorrectbook it will require exchanging it through the website which couldtake a lot more time and be a much bigger hassle. If you have theteacher's syllabus and the syllabus itself is wrong, the teacher willusually be far more lenient with students who need to take the timeto obtain the correct book.

Tip #2: The Name isn't enoughsometimes

Many times students will have the nameof the correct textbook, order it online, and show up to class andrealize that their book looks different than other students'. This isbecause many textbooks release the same book with updated informationas a new edition. If you have the wrong edition it is usuallypossible to get through a class with little inconvenience, but thepage numbers will be different and there may be assignments and testquestions concerning material your book doesn't cover. So be sure todouble and triple check that you have the right edition when youorder your textbooks online.

Tip #3 Plan ahead for shipping times

One of the key setbacks to orderingtextbooks online is the shipping time. Shipping can take from a fewdays to several weeks depending on both the actual time it takes toship the book and the availability of the book. Often, there may bemore demand for a specific textbook than planned, causing significantdelays. The last thing a good student wants is to show up to classwithout their book, not knowing when it will arrive. So ensure thatyou have planned a reasonable amount of time for your books toarrive, usually a week or two, this will greatly minimize the risksof ordering online and minimize the problems caused by a delay inshipping

Tip #4 Remember Shipping Costs

This is one of the oldest and mosteffective online scams. Many sites will claim incredibly inexpensivetextbooks, or even slightly lower prices than large book-sellingwebsites. Many times however, these sites will charge ridiculouslyhigh shipping costs, allowing them to make a much higher profit onthe book, and will often make the book cost much more than it wouldfrom a bookstore or even other online source.

Tip #5 Don't forget to check what'sin the public domain

Some classes will require students toread older literature, sometimes in addition to textbooks or in placeof them. Most instructors are unconcerned with the edition of thebook, if you're unsure just ask, and may not even require students tobring a copy to class. When a book is old enough, it is placed in thepublic domain meaning that the work is free to use. There aremany websites that post the text of these works online with nocharge, and others are even able to provide them in a format fore-readers. Students looking to save some money should become familiarwith these sites, these books can also be a great way to read classicliterature on your own without needing to buy a copy from abookstore.

College life can sometimes feel like aconstant struggle to reduce costs, and ordering textbooks online canbe a big step to saving money. Going back to college is difficultenough without high textbook costs. Follow these tips and you cansave money by ordering online, but like any good college student, still be smart about it.
