Shia LaBeouf Wears Paper Bag While Promoting Nymphomaniac in Berlin

Shia LaBeouf made quite an impression while promoting his new film at the Berlin International Film Festival this weekend. The actor stormed out of a press conference for Lars von Triers Nymphomaniac: Volume I after giving a bizarre answer to a single question on Sunday, and later donned a paper bag on his head for the red-carpet premiere of the film, according to T he Hollywood Reporter . Take a Look Through Shia LaBeoufs DIY Graphic Novels About ten minutes into the press conference, LaBeouf was asked what it was like to shoot a movie with so many sex scenes, to which he answered cryptically: When the seagulls follow the trawler, its because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea. Thank you very much. LaBeouf, who attracted some derision last year for allegedly plagiarizing comic artist Daniel Clowes in his directorial debut, HowardCantour.com, and then plagiarizing his apology for doing so, was quoting French soccer star Eric Cantona, who delivered the same line during a ...

John Heard: Costars, Actors React to Home Alone Stars Death

John Heards sudden death Friday inside a Palo Alto, California hotel room is being mourned by costars of his many movies, reminding filmgoers of the actors prolific career. Heard, perhaps best known for his role as Kevin McCallisters father in a pair of Home Alone films, was found dead in his hotel room Friday just days after undergoing minor back surgery, according to his rep. Heard also had memorable roles in 1998s Big , as Tom Hanks rival, and the movie Beaches of that same year, as Bette Midlers husband. The Washington, D.C. native also starred opposite Elijah Wood in 1992s Radio Flyer and had a recurring role on The Sopranos , as Detective Vin Makazian. Celebrities took to social media over the weekend to remember the actor, who most recently appeared on the Fox police drama APB . (Hes also set to appear in the film Last Rampage , which is due out in September.) John Heard, 'Home Alone' Actor, Dead at 72Performing With Missy Elliott, 17 Years LaterTop 30 Stephen King Mov...

The Dark Knight Rises

Audiences will be arguing forever about director Christopher Nolans capper to his Batman trilogy. Want to bitch? Start with the reactionary politics and that franchisefeeder of an ending. But the sheer scope of Nolans vision with emotion and spectacle thundering across the screen is staggering. The Dark Knight Rises is the King Daddy of summer movie epics. For nearly three hours, Nolan juggles themes that took root in 2005s Batman Begins and reached doomsday perfection in 2008s The Dark Knight with the late Heath Ledgers masterful, Oscar- winning performance as the Joker. The director and his coscreenwriter, brother Jonathan Nolan, pick up the story eight years after Batman (Christian Bale) took the rap for DA Harvey Dent. It was Dent who died going psycho as the evil Two- Face, but Commissioner Gordon (the reliably superb Gary Oldman) persuaded Batman to take the blame as an impetus for severe new crime laws in Gotham. This new era of crimebusting is built on lies, which is hell ...

Submarine

Like Super 8 , this astringently funny coming-of-age odyssey from writer-director Richard Ayoade is set before the era of cellphone cameras. Submarine ups periscope on Oliver Tate (the hypnotically morose Craig Roberts), a 15-year-old Welsh fantasist who sees his life as a home movie, creating scenarios that include his death. There are no monsters, unless you count the leatherboy life coach (Paddy Considine), whom Oliver thinks is shagging his mum (Sally Hawkins) and driving his dad (Noah Taylor) deeper into depression. He forges letters from dad to mum formally requesting sex. Hilarious. Except for a desire to sacrifice his cherry to Jordana (the wonderfully acerbic Yasmin Paige), his pyromaniac lust object, Oliver lives in his head. You cant trust a word he narrates. Ayoade, the British comic making a remarkable feature debut with his adaptation of Joe Dunthornes 2008 novel, blends mirth and malice with deadpan brilliance. The 12 Must-See Summer Movies Plus Five Unheralded Gems an...

Q&A: Benedict Cumberbatch on Star Trek, Sherlock and Julian Assange

Benedict Cumberbatch hits Hollywood at warp speed this summer, armed with a space suit and a name that would make even Charles Dickens blush. The English actor is best known as the titular character on BBC Americas Sherlock , but this weekend, Americans will meet him as the vengeful terrorist John Harrison in Star Trek Into Darkness . Cumberbatch spoke with Rolling Stone about his natural state (ramshackle), intense fan following (@cumberbitches) and his next role (code-cracker Alan Turing). Summer Movie Preview 2013: Star Trek Into Darkness I read that you werent a Trek fan growing up. When youre a kid, Star Trek is a slower burn. Its funny, its entertaining, but it also has a maturity about it which is its universal appeal, I think. Its about the nature of existence, what it means to belong and what future democracy could be. How would you describe your character, John Harrison? Hes a one-man weapon of mass destruction, driven by super-human levels of emotion. The care he has for...

Wine Country Review: Amy Poehler and Friends Big-Screen Punch-Drunk Sitcom

It may be damning with faint praise to say that Wine Country goes down easy. But its hardly a crime against cinema that this amiable ramble with six female friends on a weekend break in Napa Valley does not feel the need to color outside the box. Making her feature directing debut in an ensemble comedy with notes of sweet and melancholy, Amy Poehler doesnt show off with flashy tricks, preferring to stick close to women, mostly her best friends from Saturday Night Live, who refuse to go gently into Hollywood obsolescence. Drawing on real life for inspiration, Wine Country is based on an actual trip Poehler and friends took to Napa two years ago to celebrate the 50th birthday of Rachel Dratch. Along for the ride were Maya Rudolph, Ana Gasteyer, Paula Pell and Emily Spivey, who wrote the script with Liz Cackowski. Wheres iconic iconic partner-in-crime Tina Fey? Shes there, too, playing Tammy, the Airbnb host who rents her home to this wild bunch. Of course, everyone is playing a fictio...

Rogue One Review: The Force Is Definitely With This Amazing Star Wars Spinoff

Talk about a blast from the past Rogue One: A Star Wars Story literally is just that. Taking place just before the events of the first released Star Wars movie in 1977, this spin-off/prequel has the same primitive, lived-in, emotional, loopy, lets-put-on-a-show spirit that made us fall in love with the original trilogy. Its the first stand-alone chapter in the franchise, and not the bridge between then and now that J.J. Abrams cleverly constructed last year with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. As a movie, it can feel alternately slow and rushed, cobbled together out of spare parts, and in need of more time on the drawing board. But the damn thing is alive and bursting with the euphoric joy of discovery that caught us up in the adventurous fun nearly four decades ago. Familiar faces, human and droid, make cameos. But not once do you doubt that the new characters are breathing the same air as Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie and that baddest of badasses, Darth Vader. 25 Best Movie Performances ...

Watch Nick Jonas Play Raging Frat Boy in Goat Trailer

In the intense and brooding drama Goat , set for release on September 23rd, Nick Jonas surprisingly wowed audiences at this years Sundance Film Festival with his conflicted portrayal of Brett, a young frat pledges defensive older brother. But hes helpless to save his siblingBrad (Ben Schnetzer) when the merciless hazing from the elders of Phi Sig takes a series of increasingly dark turns. In the films newly released trailer, the mistreatment escalates from a little over the line to technically a war crime in short order. The trailer highlights Goat producer James Francos brief appearance on the other side of the camera as a long-since-graduated Phi Sig member who likes to visithis old stomping grounds and relive the glory days. Though the music selection almost makes this slow-burning, carefully measured psychodrama look like a Spring Breakers sequel hulked out on testosterone, the trailer captures the frightening toxic masculinity that invigorates the movie. As a new round of freshmen...

Role Models

Sometimes a shamelessly stoopid, proudly profane R-rated comedy is all you want out of life. Role Models more than fills the bill. Its killer funny. Cheers to Paul Rudd he should be a star by now who takes just the right wry comic tone as Danny, an L.A. misanthrope flushing his life down the shitter. Danny and his sex-crazed partner, Wheeler (Seann William Scott, the immortal Stifler), earn cash by selling Minotaur energy drinks. Wheeler wears the hairy costume. Danny drives the monster truck, until self-loathing prods him to use the vehicle as a WMD. The result is a jail sentence that Dannys lawyer love (the underused Elizabeth Banks) gets reduced to 150 hours of community service, but not before dumping him. And so sit meets com, as our boys are enlisted by Sturdy Wings, a mentoring program run by a psychotic ex-junkie (Jane Lynch, a god of inspired lunacy). Wheeler is assigned to Ronnie (Bobbe J. Thompson), a 10-year-old black kid who immediately accuses the big guy of fondling h...

The Walk

Expect the worst from the first half of The Walk . Thats the part before high-wire artist Philippe Petit (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) hits New York in 1974 and strings up a wire between the World Trade Center towers. Director and co-writer Robert Zemeckis kills time with curdled whimsy as Gordon-Levitt, speaking in zee outrageous French accent, shows us Petits early years as a Paris street magician, student of Papa Rudy (Ben Kingsley) and lover of Annie (Charlotte Le Bon). But then, oh, baby, does this movie fly. Were off from the first suspenseful minute as Petit and his accomplices sneak into the towers (prepare to choke up at the digital re-creation), set up shop and pull off the most lyrical and illicit piece of performance art in, like, ever. Sure, James Marshs striking 2008 documentary Man on Wire traveled the same road. But Zemeckis, a technical virtuoso, does it in 3D IMAX. With the help of a killer FX team and cinematographer Dariusz Wolski, The Walk puts us up there 1,360 feet ab...

HBO Courts Danger With Gonzo Vice Show

Vice , HBOs half-hour newsmagazine that premieres today, plans to expose the absurdity of the modern condition, as its tagline promises. In the opening episode, Vice Media CEO Shane Smith drives through Kabul, wearing black Ray-Bans and set to interview a senior Taliban leader and old pal of Osama bin Laden. By the season finale, reporter Ryan Duffy hangs in North Korea with Dennis Rodman, Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un and the Harlem Globetrotters. Leaked Cable: U.S. Confronted China Over Illicit North Korea Weapons Deal I think what you have to do is you have to go into these places and do what Hunter S. Thompson would have done, and immerse yourself in the story, Smith tells Rolling Stone . He has been with Vice Media since it began as a magazine in Montreal in 1994. Dont be afraid of the story, and go with it. Fortunately, fear doesnt seem to be an issue for Vice s young, tattooed correspondents, who always seem ready for danger or a beer. Over the course of the season, they interview...

The Hills Have Eyes

See cannibal mutants run amok in the California desert! See an American family on a camping trip brutalized by these deformed victims of atomic testing! See mom (Kathleen Quinlan) and dad (Ted Levine) try to protect their daughters teen sexpot Brenda (Emilie De Ravin) and new mom Lynn (Vinessa Shaw) from rape and worse while kid brother Bobby (Dan Byrd) and Lynns tadpole husband, Doug (Aaron Stanford), watch in horror until they become killers themselves! See the familys two dogs, Beauty and Beast, do their part to kick mutant ass! Guess which pooch survives! Back in 1977, director Wes Craven ( Scream ) gave this tale a primitive pow on a shoestring budget of $325,000. The remake, directed and co-written by Alexandre Aja ( High Tension ), pours more money and gore into the mix. But Aja has a serious streak, drawing dysfunction parallels between the mutant family and the allegedly normal one. Aja also comes out squarely against nuclear testing. How brave. What good is a wallow in sick...

Duets Recap: Finding Inspiration?

Duets is a rather confounding show with a questionable ranking system based on super-secret judges votes and absolutely no viewer input. And with another three weeks of pre-taped episodes, there will continue to be no viewer voting until the live shows roll around. At least we assume viewers get to vote at that point, but who knows, since theyve yet to address this mystical concept. Right now, the show has so many flaws its too exhausting to point them out. Were just trying to enjoy it for what it is: something to fill the void until must-see TV returns in the fall. Hey, at least eliminations have finally begun, making things a little more interesting. But wait how can there be an elimination if viewers didnt vote? Well, the power is completely in the judges hands. Yes, Kelly Clarkson, Robin Thicke, Jennifer Nettles and John Legend are the be-all and end-all when it comes to deciding who stays and who goes. But dont expect any of them to actually get their hands dirty when it comes to...

Watch Every Super Bowl 52 Movie Trailer, From Worst to Best

Super Bowl LII turned out to be a real barn-burner and though fewer trailers ran during this years ad space than in past gridiron showdowns, those that showed up brought their A-game. The nights MVP? Netflix, who blitzed everyone with an Internet connection courtesy of a surprise sequel release thats undoubtedly left dozens of Cloverfield fans dozing off at their desks. From Marvels upcoming all-star blitz to the latest blockbuster featuring the Rock jumping off of something very, very tall, heres how this years Super Bowl movie trailers stacked up. Watch em all, from worst to best. Skyscraper Whats the deal? The Rock goes Die Hard when a cataclysmic threat traps Dwayne Johnson (playing a security expert and former FBI flack with one prosthetic foot, the rare instance of Chekov trading the gun-on-the-mantle for an entire limb!) and his innocent family in a tower under siege. In keeping with the storied tradition of past DwayJo showcases San Andreas and the later Fast and Furious se...

Hannah Montana: The Trailer

Photo: Walt Disney Pictures Look, the studio didnt show me the movie. Why would they? So the trailer is all I have. The darned thing lasts only two minutes and 17 seconds, but it still sent me spiraling into sugar shock. The funny thing is that Miley Cyrus, chatting on TV, comes off as an appealingly tough cookie. On screen, at least in this trailer, she looks so Disneyfied shes practically a cartoon character. The target audience of tweens willingly believes that no one can tell the difference between Miley and her pop star alter ego, Hannah Montana. Mileys blonde wig works like Clark Kents glasses. Got that? The plot that peeks through the trailers hard sell suggests that Mileys father (read: dad Billy Ray Cyrus) has tricked her back home to Tennessee after the wicked girl misbehaved in the big city. What was Mileys sin as blonde vixen Hannah Montana? A shoe fight with Tyra Banks! OMG! Soon the wig is off and Miley is playing with farm animals, flirting with a sexually nonthreatening...

Six Things We Learned About Dark Phoenix and the X-Men Franchise

Its a simple story, more or less: Girl meets boy, girls mutant powers multiply to galaxy-eating levels, girl turns evil and glow-y. But telling the saga of Dark Phoenix, centered on the corruption of X-Men member Jean Grey, has somehow always been a fraught task. Even in the original comic-book version, writer Chris Claremont and artist John Byrne ended up reworking their ending at the last minute when Jim Shooter, then Marvels editor-in-chief, argued that Grey couldnt go unpunished after committing genocide against an entire planet which, to be fair, is a solid point. 2006s X-Men: The Last Stand took a half-hearted stab at adapting the storyline, but made it one plot among many, pleasing no one and nearly killing the franchise along with some of its most popular characters. Which brings us to Dark Phoenix, the final entry in the current cinematic X-Men saga. Though the movie is facing widespread critical skepticism, it is at least a more robust attempt at telling the story than its ...

Brno Opens at No. 1, but Did You Like It Better Than Borat or Get Mad Enough to Demand a Refund?

Wassup? Brno , starring Sacha Baron Cohen as a gay Austrian fashionista out to conquer Hollywood, takes in $30 million over the weekend in America, kicks in another $25 million internationally, hits the box-office sweet spot as numero uno, and yet the media reports it as a disappointment. Brno is no Borat, said the numbers report in the New York Times , following a censorious Friday review of the film (the joke is on you). Huh? What? Brno only cost a reported $42.5 million to make. Its bound to be profitable, even if it totals less than the $128 million taken in by Borat , Baron Cohens Kazakhstan romp which opened to $26 million in 2006. Heres the deal: Though Brno beat the debut numbers of Borat , Brno plays in three times as many theaters. By that (faulty) logic it should have made three times as much, about $75 million. Worse yet, Brno dropped a tall 39 percent from Friday to Saturday, while Borat enjoyed an uptick. Thats a more serious concern. What does it all mean? Is homoph...

Exclusive Review: Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End

For more Pirates of the Caribbean, check out the Rolling Stone cover story with Keith Richards and Johnny Depp and our exclusive photo gallery posing as only a father and son could. The good news first: Keith Richards totally rocks it playing pirate daddy to Johnny Depps Capt. Jack Sparrow. The deep rumble of his voice and those hooded eyes that narrowly open like the creaky gates of hell make him what the rest of this three-peat is not: authentically scary. Its fun to see Richards swagger, even sitting down. Watch him stage a macabre reunion for Jack and his dear old mum. Dont worry, I wont reveal her secret. So whats the bad news? Richards is onscreen for barely two minutes. The rest of At Worlds End left me at wits end wading through nearly three hours of punishing exposition, endless blather (pirates take meetings who knew?), an overload of digital effects and shameless setups for Pirates 4 . I ask you people: Even if you like Depp (and who doesnt?), do you understand one bloody...

Where the Truth Lies

Not since Showgirls has an NC-17 flop been this irresistible the truth hurts. awful finds new meaning in this monumental misfire from Atom Egoyan, the Armenian director of art films such as The Sweet Hereafter and Exotica . The source material a gossipy 2003 roman a clef by Rupert Holmes that imagines what broke up the 1950s comedy team of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis is tawdry enough. But to see fine actors like Colin Firth (he plays Vince Collins, the Dean figure) and Kevin Bacon (wildly miscast as wacky Jew Lanny Morris, the Jerry clone) stuck in this career crusher would be sad indeed, if it wasnt such a guilty pleasure. What else do you call a movie that posits so many delicious excuses for the split: Did one of the team try to stick his dick up his partners butt? Were both involved in the murder of a hotel maid with whom they had just enjoyed a three-way? Did the Jersey mob dump the body to protect their reputations? Certainly none of this turns up in Dean and Me (A Love Story...

Echo in the Canyon: See Jakob Dylan, Tom Petty, Brian Wilson, More in New Trailer

Brian Wilson, Tom Petty, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Graham Nash and other rock architects reflect on the creative explosion of mid-Sixties Los Angeles in a new trailer for upcoming documentary Echo in the Canyon . Andrew Slater a former music journalist, record producer and label executive helmed the film, which explores the influence of the definitive California sound cemented by artists like the Beach Boys, the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and the Mamas and the Papas. Throughout the clip, songwriters recall the sonic cross-pollination that occurred during this fertile period, when bands showed up at each others houses, played in-progress songs and took inspiration from each others music. California was like this legendary paradise, Petty says, before plugging in a signature Rickenbacker electric guitar. (The doc marks his last film interview.) Laurel Canyon became this heavenly place, Clapton recalls, and Starr notes that he fell in love with the scene. Stevie Nicks on Tom Petty, Dra...

Martin Scorsese Remembers Don Rickles: He Made Comedy Into an Art Form

A little over two decades ago, Martin Scorsese cast insult-comic legend Don Rickles in his movie Casino as Billy Sherbert, a casino manager who works with Robert De Niros character Sam Rothstein. While making the movie, he bonded with the director, who has penned a statement paying tribute to the late comedian. Don Rickles was a giant, a legend and I can hear his voice now, skewering me for being so lofty, Scorsese wrote. I had the honor of working with him on my picture Casino . He was a professional. He kept me doubled over with laughter every day on the set yet he was a complete pro. We became friends over the years and I had the honor of being roasted by him more than once sometimes when I didnt expect it, he continued. He just started showing up at places and insulting me. Experiencing Don, and tuning into his mind, I witnessed the evolution of his comedy, he concluded. It was like listening to a great jazz musician wail. Nobody else did what he did. He made comedy into an art ...

American Idol Recap: Curse of the Makeover

Wednesday night we learned a valuable lesson: Its easy to sing Billy Joel badly. Especially when you have never heard a Billy Joel song before because you are a teenager and Billy Joel hasnt produced a hit since 1993. Besides, Lana Del Rey is here! Shes singing Video Games, and surely she will show these young whippersnappers a thing or two about singing, right? But before we get our candy, we have to eat our vegetables in the form of the Top 10 giving us a preview of the live show by singing Billy Joels For the Longest Time. While individually these singers are all quite talented (except for maybe Heejun Han ), the second they raise their voices in song together its still an unholy mess, with Elise Testone trying to soothe Steven Tylers pain with an impromptu lap dance. Maybe Diddy can teach them about unity next time hes around you know, if Jennifer Lopez lets him come back. Or he forgives her for calling him Puffy on camera last night. Also, both Colton Dixon and Phillip Phillips...

The Farewell Review: Parting (and Lying) Is Such Sweet Sorrow

Writer-director Lulu Wang draws on her own life to create the story of a Chinese family who come together to celebrate a wedding thats closer to a funeral. Awkwafina, the rapper-comic and laugh-delivering dynamo of Crazy Rich Asians and Oceans 8, dials down to give a sublime and finely textured performance as Billi, a New Yorker who returns home to China to see her grandmother Nai Nai (the hilarious, heartbreaking and altogether wonderful Shuzhen Zhao). The elderly woman has been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. The catch is that Nai Nais relatives dont want her to know the painful truth. According to Chinese custom, its the kinder way. The Farewell: Lulu Wangs Truth, Lies, and the Long Goodbye It soon becomes clear why The Farewell is billed as based on an actual lie. The deception does not sit well with the scrupulous Billi a writer based in Brooklyn who isnt exactly being honest about the fact thats shes been turned down for a Guggenheim Fellowship. She hasnt been home to ...

Boardwalk Empire Renewed for Fourth Season

Boardwalk Empire will return to HBO for a fourth season, network president of programming Michael Lombardo announced today. Creator Terry Winter, [executive producer] Martin Scorsese and the rest of their outstanding team continue to produce a stunning show that never fails to surprise and entertain, Lombardo said in statement. We are excited to bring this unique series back for a fourth season. The show which stars Steve Buscemi as Atlantic Citys notorious Prohibition-era head honcho Enoch Nucky Thompson recently picked up four Emmy awards and began its third season a few weeks back. Theres no word yet on when production will begin for the fourth season, or when it would premiere. Be sure to check out our recap of this weeks episode, as well as our rundown of Boardwalk Empire s worst acts of betrayal.

Sony Pictures Chairman: Zero Dark Thirty Does Not Advocate Torture

An executive with Sony Pictures spoke out on Friday to defend Zero Dark Thirty against charges that the film advocates torture, Reuters reports. The statement came in response to criticism from a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, who urged fellow AMPAS members not to vote for the film in the Academy Awards. We are outraged that any responsible member of the Academy would use their voting status in AMPAS as a platform to advance their own political agenda, said Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and chairman of its Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group. This film should be judged free of partisanship, she said, stating that the film does not advocate torture. Secrets of Zero Dark Thirty In a rally against the torture of terror suspects on Friday in Los Angeles, actor and Academy member David Clendon had denounced the film, which dramatizes the hunt for Osama bin Laden. I believe that the film clearly promotes a tolerance for torture, Clennon...

Jurassic World Trailer Delivers Prehistoric Mayhem

The last words anyone wants to hear before they visit a theme park populated by dinosaurs is: If something chases you: Run! Its a statement that promises all sorts of prehistoric mayhem, and the first trailer for Jurassic World delivers just that in full. Amongst the numerous monsters teased in the clip are a humongous crocodile-like creature that devours a shark, a horde of bipeds frolicking through an open field and a clan of raptors that converge alongside Chris Pratt as he speeds through the jungle on a motorcycle. Jurassic World also features a genetically modified hybrid creature thats apparently as smart as it is bloodthirsty. As Pratt dryly puts it: You just went and made a new dinosaur? Probably not a good idea. The highly-anticipated Jurassic World is being produced by the original films director, Steven Spielberg, and is slated to open June 12th, 2015 some 14 years after the franchises last entry, Jurassic Park III . (Its directed by Colin Trevorrow, the filmmaker behind ...

Watch Hilary Duffs Creepy Visions in The Haunting of Sharon Tate Trailer

Hilary Duff stars as the terrified titular actress in the new trailer for The Haunting of Sharon Tate , the horror film that views the Manson family murders through Tates perspective. Five people Tate and her unborn child, Jay Sebring, Wojciech Frykowski and Abigail Folger were killed on August 8th, 1969. After an expansive aerial shot over the Hollywood sign, the clip soundtracked by the Zombies Time of the Season opens with a pregnant and paranoid Tate at her home in the Benedict Canyon area of Los Angeles, California. As the film star awaits the return of her husband, filmmaker Roman Polanski, she suffers bleak visions of her own death. The trailer serves as a disturbing montage showing Tate awaking from a nightmare, shadowy figures appearing at her front door and the infamous crime scene message HELTER SKELTER written in blood on a wall. This person, these people theyre a threat to my safety and to the safety of my baby, Tate cries. Daniel Farrands ( The Amityville Murders ) w...

Why We Needed Logan to Kill the Modern Superhero Movie

It started with the title a simple name, not Wolverine IV , or the X-mans handle with an overblown subtitle attached to it, or even something akin to The Wolverine, which included a definite article lest you confuse him with other sharp-clawed mutant superheroes. Then came the first trailer, a stark preview set to Johnny Cashs version of Hurt. There was no in a world narration, no giant robots, no costumes; Patrick Stewarts Charles Xavier briefly showed up, as did a mysterious man bandaged up like Claude Rains and someone who was clearly a bad guy, Otherwise, there were no other X-men in sight. Rather than a big city being used as a battleground, we got a desolate, abandoned power station that might have been down the road from Fury Road. Hugh Jackman had a full beard. You could tell this would be different. The whole thing felt funereal from the get-go. How 'Logan' Director James Mangold Made the Most Violent Wolverine Movie YetHow Superhero Movies Became Too Big To Fail40...

Howard Stern Becomes Judge on Americas Got Talent

Howard Stern has signed a deal to join the judging panel of NBCs Americas Got Talent in 2012. Im going to be Piers [Morgan] on steroids, Stern said in the announcement, referring to former lead judge Piers Morgan. Im going to go there as a serious judge. Stern announced the gig on his Sirius satellite radio show this morning, where his longtime manager, Don Buchwald, presented the host with the official contracts from NBC. Stern had been a fan of Americas Got Talent for some time, frequently talking about the show on the air and often musing that he would be a better judge than the stars on the panel, who include his friends Howie Mandel and Sharon Osbourne. This nonsense of Howie and Sharon putting through less than talented people has got to stop, Stern told his audience. Under my administration, there will be no Frank Sinatra impersonators winning for the year. If people think Im the crazy man, I am not. I am the voice of reason. He later vowed that goofy acts are not going throug...
